Michael Madhana Kama Rajan

I was about to go to sleep at around 2 AM, last night (or rather today morning), and realised that dad had left the TV on in the hall. As I went to switch it off, I saw some familiar scenes of a movie and instantly recognised it as the hugely popular comedy hit, from the early 90′s, starring Kamal Hassan – Michael Madhana Kama Rajan!! Kamal Hassan has a quadra-role in it and carries out all four roles to perfection!

Anybody who has seen this movie once will agree that it is one of the most hilarious comedies ever! Incidentally, only a few days back, I was planning on getting a cd or dvd and watching this movie again and when I saw it come on TV I just didnt want to miss it! So no prizes for guessing what I did the next few hours!
The story is about a set of identical quadraplets being separated at birth by an uncle for his own devious intentions. The four babies are left at different places and found by different people and brought up by them. One baby is left in a temple and picked up by a Palakkad chef. Another is left in a car, who gets picked up by its own father. One is left in an orphanage, and a thug picks the last one.br The movie goes through various twists and turns and there is a lot of confusion and you are guaranteed to roll on the floor laughing your guts out! br Towards the end there is a plot to kill Madhan (who was found by his own dad, and who is very rich). The guy hired to do the job is Michael (who was picked up by the thug). Meanwhile, Madhan meets Rajan (who was dropped at orphanage) somewhere and switches places with him. Then Rajan goes to Madhan’s house pretending to be Madhan for awhile and asks Madhan’s body guard (Bheem Boy) to put some money in the locker, which was wanted by Madhan’s assistant, Avinashi. Avinashi needs the money for his daughter’s wedding and finds Kameshwaran (who was picked by the Palakkad chef) all of a sudden somewhere. He thinks of a plan to get Kameshwaran to pretend to be Madhan and to order the body guard to remove the money and give it to Ashwini. He asks Kameshwaran to memorise a line, which goes something like this – “Bheem Boy, Bheem Boy, andha locker lendhu aaru latchathai eduthu indha Avinashi naayin moonjiyil vitteri”. Kameshwaran (forced into this scheme by his Pati) memorises this and they all head to Madhan’s house (in Bangalore) where Rajan is present (pretending to be Madhan) and where Michael (also pretending to be Madhan after a shave) also arrives after kidnapping Madhan and to steal some of Madhan’s money. What follows are a lot of hilarious scenes filled with more confusion, when Madhan’s girl, Rajan’s girl and Kameshwaran’s wife all turn up and not knowing that there are quadraplets, all go after the poor, bewildered Kameshwaran!! Major (and I mean really major) ROTF!! The movie ends at some wooden house on some hill near Bangalore, where the truth is revealed about the evil uncle and the separated quadraplets meet each other and their parents and after a struggle with a crumbling building all manage to escape safe and all’s well that ends well!

The funniest Kamal character in the movie is easily Kameshwaran (the Pallakkad cook). His accent and style of speaking Tamil leaves you in splits of laughter. The rest of his family are also good fun, especially his martial arts knowing Pati (grand mother), his father (and their hilarious encounter with the “mean” [fish] in the sambar at a Brahmin wedding) and ofcourse his wife (with whom he has a very funny first night along with Avinashi)!!! :)

This movie is a must watch and can be watched over and over again and will still be just as funny. It easily figures in my all time favourite movies list.
As expected I was laughing like crazy at the odd hours of the night and though I tried to laugh softly, I couldnt help myself! Luckily my parents didn’t wake up due to all the noise.
After the movie at some 5:30 AM, I wasn’t feeling sleepy, so I got online, checked my mail and finally went to sleep at around 6:15 AM. Had to get up again by 9:30 – 10:00 and rush to office as I had to meet my new project manager at work!

Update: I found an orkut community for this movie. Check it out here.
